Giving a embroidery or canvas kit as a present: what a difference it really makes

A gift that’s used up in an evening is forgotten within a week. A cross-stitch kit or a canvas to embroider offers 10 to 40 hours of creativity in the hands of the person you’re giving it to. This is no small matter: how long a gift is used is one of the criteria that distinguishes a memorable gift from a seasonal trinket.

Embroidery has seen a tangible resurgence since 2020 — sales of threads and kits rose by 23 per cent in France between 2020 and 2023, according to data from manufacturers DMC and Anchor. This isn’t just a passing fad: it’s a craft that meets a real need to slow down, to focus on manual work, and to create a tangible result that can be framed or given as a gift in turn.

Which kit to choose depending on the recipient’s profile

The first question to ask yourself: has the person ever embroidered before? If not, a complete kit with pre-printed fabric, pre-selected threads and needles included is essential. Giving just a pattern to a beginner is a sure-fire way of ensuring the gift ends up in a drawer.

For a beginner or a child over the age of 8, children’s kits with large stitches and simple designs (animals, characters) allow them to complete their first project in 2 to 4 hours — just enough time for them to enjoy the experience without becoming frustrated. Beginners’ kits for adults generally recommend 14 or 16 threads per cm Aida cloth, which is neither too dense nor too loose.

For someone who already practises embroidery, a good choice is often a design they wouldn’t normally buy for themselves — a large-scale piece, an unusual subject, or a embroidered cushion kit with an intricate design. Experienced embroiderers particularly appreciate kits containing high-quality mouliné threads: the difference between standard thread and Anchor or DMC thread is evident from the very first row of stitches.

The sizes that work best as gifts

The postcard size (approx. 10 x 15 cm) is the most affordable (€8 to €15) and can be completed in one or two evenings. It’s a good way to see if the person takes to it. The standard cushion size (40 x 40 cm) requires a greater investment — expect to pay between 25 and 60 € depending on the brand — but produces a finished item that can be used, which enhances the sense of satisfaction.

Cross-stitch kits with frames included have a practical advantage: the finished piece can be displayed straight away without needing to buy anything extra. For someone who doesn’t yet have the equipment, consider including one or two essential embroidery accessories with the kit — a good embroidery hoop or a pair of fine scissors make all the difference on a day-to-day basis.

Embroidery, canvas, tapestry: useful differences to know before giving a gift

These three techniques do not require the same level of commitment or the same tools. Cross-stitch on Aida cloth is the most accessible: a single type of stitch, a clear grid, and quick results. Tapestry on plastic or cotton canvas uses thicker wool — the finish is matt, textured, and often ‘looser’ in the sense that the designs resemble traditional cushions or decorative wall hangings.

Embroidery patterns and diagrams without a pre-assembled kit are aimed at crafters who already have their own threads and tools. This gift option only works well if you know exactly what the recipient already has in stock. If in doubt, the complete kit remains the safest choice.

Budget and presentation: two factors that are often overlooked

A decent-quality kit costs between €18 and €45. For under €15, the threads are often low-grade polyester and the fabric warps when damp — you can feel this in your hands after an hour. Above €50, you’re looking at kits from major brands (Riolis, Thea Gouverneur, Dimensions) with pre-sorted threads, precisely numbered colours and clear, multilingual instructions.

In terms of presentation, a box with the contents visible through a transparent window makes a better impression than generic kraft packaging. Some kits are designed to be given as gifts straight away — the box is part of the product. This is something to check on the product page before ordering.

How can you tell if a kit is truly complete for a beginner?

A complete kit always includes: the printed or grid-patterned canvas, all the necessary threads in sufficient quantities, at least one tapestry needle, and instructions with a colour chart. If any of these items is missing or sold separately, the kit is not self-contained. Also check whether the frame or hoop is included — this is often the accessory people forget to buy when they’re just starting out.

What is the minimum age for giving a child an embroidery kit?

Most manufacturers recommend 8 years old for cross-stitch kits on wide canvas (11 threads/cm). For younger children, the needles and handling the thread can become frustrating. For 6–7-year-olds, there are simple sewing kits without metal needles, using plastic and laces — a good, risk-free way to get started. Specialised children’s kits always state the recommended age on the packaging.

Can you give just the accessories rather than a complete kit?

Yes, if the person already practises the craft. A good wooden embroidery hoop measuring 20 to 25 cm (between €8 and €18 depending on the quality of the screw), a pair of fine, pointed scissors, or a thread organiser make useful gifts that can be put to immediate use. Canvas accessories such as clip-on frames or thread winders are a great addition to a kit the recipient already owns. For a beginner, always opt for the complete kit first.

Is embroidery a suitable gift for a man?

Yes, provided you choose the right design. Kits featuring geometric, cartographic (city maps, topographical maps), typographic or video game-inspired motifs are just as popular with men as they are with women. Avoid kits featuring flowers and birds if you don’t know the recipient’s tastes. The craft itself is gender-neutral — embroidery has been taught in mixed-gender classes throughout France for a good ten years now.
