The different types of zippers:
Separable or non-separable zipper?
Zippers can be separable or not. In other words, either you can fully separate your zipper, or the bottom of your zipper stays closed.
Examples:
Jackets, coats, and cardigans open all the way. You’ll therefore need to use separable zippers.
Pockets or bags have zippers that simply allow access to the inside. You’ll therefore need to use non-separable zippers.
What size should you choose?
The size of a zipper is measured from the beginning to the end of the teeth, i.e. from the bottom stop to the top stop, without counting the extra tape at the top and bottom, which simply helps you position it.
Tip:
If in doubt, it’s better to choose a zipper that’s too long rather than exactly the right size. It’s easier to shorten it than to try to place it in exactly the right spot.
How to choose the right zipper finish?
The choice of Eclair® zipper type depends above all on your type of material. You won’t choose the same finish for a leather goods item as you would for sportswear, a coat, or an evening gown. Your zipper needs to match the overall look of your material.
There are 3 main types of Eclair® zippers:
– Molded: Molded zippers are made by injecting and molding the material directly onto the tape. They’re particularly suited for outerwear and “sporty” style bags.
– Coil: Coil zippers have a spiral that’s sewn or integrated into the tape. Finer, they’re better suited for clothing and more delicate materials such as bag inner pockets.
– Metal: Metal zippers have “teeth,” usually brass, fixed onto the tape by pressure. They’re suited for more frequent use and on thicker materials such as jeans and jackets.
