Why the summer skirt is this season’s must-have
The summer skirt has that certain something that makes it irreplaceable. Lighter than trousers, more structured than a dress, it allows air to circulate around the legs and provides an immediate feeling of coolness when the temperature rises.
It’s also a piece that suits all body shapes: provided you choose the right cut, you can flatter your figure whilst staying comfortable.
Another major advantage: the skirt goes with absolutely everything! A simple linen top, a flowing blouse with balloon sleeves, a jersey vest top or even an embroidered crop top… any combination is possible.
It is precisely this versatility that makes it the number one staple of our summer wardrobe.
By sewing it yourself, you can adjust the length, width, drape and details to fit you perfectly. A luxury that ready-to-wear fashion can never offer.
Finally, let’s not forget the environmental and financial benefits: sewing your own summer skirt allows you to choose high-quality, durable fabrics – often produced locally – and to avoid fast fashion.
A win-win investment in every respect!
Different styles of summer skirts to sew
Before you get started, it’s essential to identify the style of summer skirt that best suits your tastes and lifestyle. Here’s an overview of this season’s key styles.
The boho maxi skirt
Airy, flowing and often featuring gathers or ruffles, the long boho skirt evokes holidays in the sun, evenings with friends on a terrace and strolls along the warm sand.
It’s the ideal piece for those who love romance and absolute comfort. It offers lovely protection for your legs from the sun whilst allowing your skin to breathe.
You’ll find some stunning designs in Sewing Patterns’s boho maxi skirt collection, perfect for bringing this much-loved rustic aesthetic to life.
The wrap skirt
Elegant, adjustable and flattering for all body shapes, the wrap skirt is a timeless classic that never goes out of fashion. Its best feature: it adapts to your waist thanks to its tie-up system, making it particularly comfortable and forgiving after a hearty summer meal!

The midi skirt
Neither too short nor too long, the midi skirt usually falls just below the knee and mid-calf. It adds a chic and timeless touch to all your outfits, perfect for transitioning seamlessly from the office to lunch on a terrace.
It’s often an excellent compromise for those torn between the lightness of a short skirt and the elegance of a long skirt.
The short skirt
For the hottest days or for those who like to show off their legs, the short skirt is a must-have.
Whether A-line, straight, pleated or flared, it comes in countless styles and lets you play with patterns and vibrant colours.
Choosing the right fabric for a successful summer skirt
Choosing the right fabric is undoubtedly the most important step in your sewing project. The wrong fabric can turn even the most beautiful pattern into a disaster, whilst a well-chosen fabric will enhance any cut.
Here are my recommendations as a keen seamstress:
Linen: your go-to choice
Linen remains the king of summer fabrics. Natural, breathable, absorbent and even produced in France, it ticks all the boxes.
For a skirt, opt for fine, flowing linen – definitely not upholstery linen, which would be far too stiff. Always check the weight stated on the product description: between 130 and 200 g/m² is a good range for clothing.
The only downside is that linen creases easily. But that slightly crumpled look is also part of its bohemian charm!
Voile and cotton poplin
For a light, flowing and easy-to-wear skirt, cotton voile is unbeatable. Light as a feather, it lends itself wonderfully well to gathered skirts and flared styles.
Cotton poplin, which is slightly denser, is better suited to more structured skirts such as wrap skirts or A-line skirts.
With their endless range of prints (floral, polka dots, stripes, gingham…), these fabrics offer boundless creative possibilities.
Viscose and lyocell/Tencel
If you’re dreaming of a fluid, silky drape, opt for viscose or lyocell. These fibres are incredibly comfortable to wear, lightweight and cool. They’re perfect for long, bohemian skirts and ruffled styles.
Be careful, though, as they can be a bit slippery to sew: remember to use fine needles and pin generously.
Double cotton gauze
Soft, light and airy, double cotton gauze is ideal for ultra-comfortable summer skirts. Its slightly crinkled appearance lends a natural charm, and its drape is particularly flattering on loose-fitting styles.
Vichy check – a timeless classic
Why not give Vichy a go? This iconic checked pattern, made popular by Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s and revisited by leading fashion designers such as Azzedine Alaïa, adds an irresistible retro touch to a summer skirt.
It’s a high-quality, yarn-dyed fabric – reversible and durable – which really brings out the best in simple, structured cuts.

Difficulty levels: where to start?
One of the great things about skirts is that they’re often considered one of the most accessible sewing projects. Here’s how to choose a pattern based on your skill level.
For beginners
If you’re new to sewing, start with a simple skirt with an elasticated waist. No need to fit a zip or sew a fly: it’s quick, rewarding and the result is guaranteed.
A straight or slightly flared skirt in cotton poplin or double gauze will be perfect for your first attempts. Allow around 2 to 3 hours of sewing time for a basic design.

For intermediate seamstresses
Have you already got a few sewing projects under your belt? Why not try your hand at a wrap skirt, a pleated skirt or a button-up skirt? These styles require a little more technical skill but are still very accessible and offer a hugely satisfying result.
Attaching a waistband, getting the hem just right on a flared skirt or making pockets are all little challenges that will help you improve without any stress.
For experienced sewers
If you’ve already got a good grasp of sewing, why not try your hand at more complex designs: gored skirts, concealed zips, pleated skirts with linings, or even asymmetrical skirts typical of the 2000s revival.
This is your chance to treat yourself to technical details that will make all the difference.
Sewing tips for the perfect skirt
Here are a few tips I wish I’d been given when I sewed my first summer skirt!
- Take your measurements correctly: pattern sizes do not correspond to ready-to-wear sizes. Measure your waist, hips and desired length before choosing your size.
- Wash your fabric before cutting: this is especially important for linen and cotton, which shrink on the first wash. You’ll avoid the unpleasant surprise of a skirt that’s too short after its first wash.
- Bear in mind the direction of the fabric: for patterned fabrics (stripes, gingham, directional florals), check the direction carefully before cutting. Nothing is more frustrating than a skirt with the stripes the wrong way round!
- Pay attention to the finishing touches: a neatly finished hem, overlocked seams and a flawless waistband will transform your homemade skirt into a piece worthy of a high-street shop.
- Try it out on a test piece for more fitted patterns: an old sheet will do the job perfectly for checking the proportions before cutting into your lovely fabric.
- Add some pockets! If your pattern doesn’t include any, don’t hesitate to add them into the side seams. You’ll thank me later.
How to style your summer skirt for different occasions
Once your skirt is finished, it’s time to style it! The beauty of this piece is that it suits every occasion.
For a casual day out, pair it with a simple cotton jersey T-shirt and flat sandals.
For a chic lunch, go for a linen blouse tucked into the waistband and a few gold accessories.
And for a summer evening out, pair it with a top with thin straps and delicate jewellery.
Don’t hesitate to complete your outfit with a handmade accessory for a cohesive look. A fabric bag, a straw hat or even a headband can transform your look.

Sewing your own summer skirt is much more than just a creative project: it’s a true declaration of love for slow fashion, craftsmanship and yourself. It’s treating yourself to the pleasure of wearing a unique piece, perfectly tailored to your body and your tastes.
And why not make the most of the summer spirit to add to your handmade wardrobe with other projects? A matching summer dress, a pair of linen summer trousers for the hottest days, or even a flowing blouse to pair with your new skirt…
Summer is the perfect season to experiment, dare to wear bright colours, play with prints and create a wardrobe that reflects your personality.
So get your sewing machines out of the cupboard, choose a lovely fabric, put on your favourite playlist, and get started: your perfect summer skirt is just waiting for you!
